FIFA World Cup 2018 is around the corners and we are just one day away from the start of it-- the biggest carnival of football. Everyone has been pulling up their socks for this grand tournament which comes once in 4 years. While the fans have prepared their schedule for every matches, the engineers and the management will be probing all facets of the game for insights. The 2018 FIFA World Cup will be starting on 14 June in Russia and as it kicks off, the tournament has a number of 21st century technical innovations in play which will be used through the game.As because it is the 24th century, technology stands in our finger tips today then why not technology would be supporting this beautiful game? The various technological tools in the background are set to provide additional support to referees and give extra information to the teams during the 64 matches. Let us check out some of them.

Video Assistant Referee (VAR)

If you are up to date with the tech world and also a soccer fan, you have surely come across the term VAR. It is a technology which will be in use in the world cup for the first ever time. It may change the game. In fact, it will actually decide the future of the tournament by changing some of the referring decisions in the game.Earlier, officials never used VAR. In March, the International Football Association Board approved the use of video assistant referee or VAR in football. 2018 World Cup will be the first to offer this kind of video technology as an additional tool for the referees. According to FIFA’s inside reports, VAR will correct and clear errors and missed incidents clearly defined match-changing decisions. But it is totally up to the referee to decide whether to rely on the verbal information from the video assistant referee or to review the video footage themselves on the sideline before making their decision. This new technology have broadcast and audio equipment. Over the last two years, there was customization to ensure that decisions are made fair and the best team wins. Although a bit complex, the technology is totally incredible. An extra referee will watch the game and he will be advising the officials about the decisions. In practice, it might be a bit complicated.

Goal-Line Technology

During the 2012 FIFA Club World Cup Japan in December 2012, officials worked with goal-Line Technology. Later 2013 Confederations Cup, 2014 World Cup Brazil, Euro 2016 in France and 2016 European League finals used this technology. Referees will be using this tool in Russia. This is a kind of technology where there will a transfer of signal within one second to the referee’s watch, with the help of the 14 high-speed cameras. Its information would indicate the referee that the ball crossed the goal line. According to Aleksey Nikolayev, who leads the department of refereeing and inspection at the Russian Football Union, there was early testing of electronic goal-line technology in the upcoming Russian Premier League tournament.

Electronic Performance & Tracking Systems

The third major hidden technology available at each match consists of a number of communication equipment for both the teams. Every teams’ technical and medical staff will have dedicated workstations. It will also have a dedicated line to communicate with the coaching and medical staff on the bench.According to FIFA reports, two optical tracking cameras would be tracking the players and ball. The positional data from it will be available to the analysts along with the live footage from selected tactical cameras. The insights from the technical information and the communication link for constant real-time interaction would be fed into their decisions during the match.

Telstar 18 official match ball

Telstar 18 is the first NFC connected Official Game Ball for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The name ‘Telstar’ itself is a combination of television and star. The 2018 version features a new carcass, high technology and recycled packaging. The most interesting thing lies in the ball. It includes an embedded Near-Field Communication (NFC) chip, enabling interaction with smartphones. According to the designers at Adidas, there was a new design of the ball keeping in mind that it would take the football innovation and design to a completely new level. It would offer both consumers and players an incredible new experience. But it will be the fans who will judge the success of the tournament as a spectator. But FIFA hope the extra technological input will go a long way. Or may be it will be a process made to improve matters on the ground. Or may be to change the future generation of football players.Helpful Links:http://www.foxnews.com/sports/2018/06/13/world-cup-to-use-var-technology-for-first-time-what-is-it.html
